Whānau associated with Taki Rua have had a sneak peak of an 80-minute documentary celebrating the 30-year history of the unofficial national Māori theatre company.
As Waatea News explains, Breaking Barriers will open to the public in Wellington on Friday, August 2.
Writer and director Whetu Fala says it pays tribute to the many Maori involved in Taki Rua over the decades, and also acknowledges the active support of the pākeha theatre community.
“That is a surprising thing that is continuing to come out – that our audience sees it as a testament to what can happen when Maori have full partnership and control of our stories – with a willing pākeha partner,” Fala says.
Many familiar names feature in the documentary, like the late Tungia Baker and Wi Kuki Kaa, and Once Were Warriors screenwriter Riwia Brown.
